From cuirassier barracks to an institution of higher learning

Built for the military

The FHB campus was created on the site of barracks in Brandenburg's historic military district located close to the modern-day heart of the town. The historic building with the red clinker exterior was erected between 1877 and 1881 for use by a cuirassier regiment. After a changeful history of both military and civilian use, the building was used from 1962 on as a school for training helicopter squadron officers in the National People's Army of the German Democratic Republic, who completed their studies with a degree in engineering However, it was with the establishment of the University of Applied Sciences that the site first became a civilian institute of higher learning.

Conversion

The conversion of the site and its buildings from military to civilian use involved restoring and renovating the former cuirassier barracks and buildings for academic purposes. New buildings provided the additional modern facilities necessary for teaching, research and study. The FHB is based on the fundamental principles of interdisciplinarity, internationalism and close regional co-operation and this is reflected in the architechtural design of the campus. Our stated aim is openness: on the inside and outwardly as well.

A seat of higher learning in leafy surroundings

Inside the main building restored according to historical preservation guidelines as it stands today, you would no longer be able to spot the building's previous life as cuirassier barracks The building, spacious and light, with surprising views and perspectives is equipped with the most up-to-date technology and offers excellent conditions for study and work.

The stables have undergone the same transformation: where once cuirassier horses were once housed, a truly fantastic edifice home to the university library has emerged. The campus with its old trees has expanded to include new buildings for informatics, the first technology building and the university canteen surrounded throughout by grassy areas. The halls of residence easily allow FHB students to enjoy living and studying on the attractive campus of their "university in the park".
