Bachelor in Informatics

Structure and Content

One important educational goal is to provide students with a basic knowledge in the fields of Informatics and Media, providing a sound and long term basis to further develop and specialize in the labour market. In addition to that, students are educated in specialized areas to learn the use of concrete tools, programmes and systems and beome familiar with relevant skills to be directly applied at a prospective employer. To achieve these educational objectives we offer a deliberately broad basic training, which would greatly facilitates a career entrance, and offer specific advancements in selected major areas.

Course Structure

The standard period of study for a Bachelor degree in Informatics is 6 semesters (3 years). The following consecutive Informatics Master's degree can be completed in a standard period of study in 4 semesters (2 years).

The first two semesters of the Bachelor programme are identically designed for all informatics majors (Intelligent Systems, Network Computing and Digital Media). A final choice of major courses (modules) must be made at the end of the term of the second semester. This gives students the opportunity to use the beginning of their study course as an orientation phase and to get a preview of the majors.

The first year comprises theoretical foundations of informatics, media design and media technology, programming, technical and practical informatics, mathematics, and English language instruction. Basic modules in the areas of operating systems and networks and the practical computer science are offered in the second year of study. This combination of subjects gives the students a solid and broad basic knowledge, which is particularly valuable for small and medium-sized businesses and creates the prerequisites for a sustainable training, cooperation and teamwork in their future careers. This provides the foundation for a continuation of studies in a consecutive Master's degree programme.

Projects are worked on independently in small groups from 3 to a maximum of 9 students (with a time budget of about 4 hours assistance per week) for one semester. There is constant supervision from a lecturer at a predetermined or self-chosen topic, which will essentially correspond to your current level of training.

Project work aims

  • to deepen the immediate practical relevance of studies,
  • to enhance the teamworking skills of students,
  • to offer the possibility of further specific advancements,
  • the creative combination of knowledge obtained from individual sub-regions.

By the end of the 2nd Bachelor semester students must choose modules from the three majors Intelligent Systems, Network Computing and Digital Media. For allocating a major at least 4 of the taken elective modules (ie, 20 CP) must be assigned to the major area. Majors are reported in the Diploma Supplement.

During the supervised practical project in the first half of the 6th semester, students are expected to work in fields of activities of computer scientists to gain insights into the role and functioning in companies and in the understanding of the interplay between various operational areas. Thus, the practical relevance of studies will be deepened and the students are given the opportunity to recognize the importance of their studies for professional practice. Parallel to the practical project there are accompanying seminars held at the university in order to deepen the operational experience.

The second half of the 6th semester concludes the study programme by producing a Bachelor thesis and attending a Bachelor seminar.
With the passing of the Bachelor exam the students earn the Bachelor of Science degree with detailed identification of their selected major modules and courses in the Diploma Supplement.
