Study Goals

One first objective of this study course is to provide a solid, broad-based, and modern education in the areas of informatics and media. Thus, the graduates are enabled to quickly incorporate new technologies, concepts, tools, etc. of informatics - Indispensable since informatics is still a severely changing field. Coupled with this solid foundation are specializations in one of the selected majors in Digital Media, Network Computing and Intelligent Systems.

A further important objective of this study course is derived from the aspect of internationalism. The resulting benefits of Applied Informatics are obvious:

• International degree Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
• International experience through an integrated semester abroad
• A possible (financially) sponsored study at partner universities by Erasmus
• Selection of English-instructed courses
• Majors in "Digital Media", "Network Computing" or "Intelligent Systems"
• Opportunities to continue with a Master's degree and doctorate in Germany and abroad

Structure and Content

The standard period of study for this degree programme is 6 semesters. Details can be found in the study course and exam regulations. The curriculum of the Applied Informatics degree progamme is based on the content of the curriculum of the Informatics Bachelor degree programme. After a first joint academic year, however, we offer independent courses which correspond to the special issues of an international degree programme. Thus, a series of events are held in English.

The elective (major) modules of the second year of study lead to a focused major. These modules are based on the emphasis of Network Computing, Intelligent Systems and Digital Media of the Department of Informatics and Media.

The third year of study starts with a semester abroad. A supervised practical project with a total volume of 12 weeks, closes the 6th semester. The successful completion of a practical training period is a prerequisite for the application for the Bachelor thesis.

After a successful completion of the Bachelor examination, the students earn a Bachelor of Science degree with a detailed identification of selected courses, major modules and the study abroad within the Diploma Supplement.

The profile of internationalism is maintained by including an integrated study abroad, usually taking place as a study period at one of the foreign partner universities. The semester abroad is accompanied by a foreign study seminar. The semester abroad, including the foreign study seminar comprehend for 30 credit points. The 25 credit points achieved abroad, must predominately be from informatics relevant areas. Therefore courses in the areas of informatics and media and multidisciplinary events, such as language or application courses, can be accredited to your study programme. These modules will be included in the Diploma Supplement. The Department can also decide on an alternative study programme, which is obliged to promote the idea of internationalization.

Scope

The scope of the study is equivalent to 180 ECTS credit points(European Credit Transfer System). The conversion of grades in ECTS-grades is bound to the decision of the Education Minister Conference of 15.09.2000 concerning the guidelines for the introduction of credit point systems and the modularisation of courses.

Job Description

After completion of the Bachelor thesis you gain the international Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. Regarding the procurement of expertise our international degree programme is in no way inferior to the classic Informatics Bachelor degree. Therefore, you are open to the same professions, adding the bonus of your international experience. After a good degree at the University of Applied Sciences Brandenburg you can also continue studying in the consecutive Master's degree programme in Informatics.

The special capability of computer scientists lies in the analysis, design and configuration of hardware and software systems and their integration into existing environments, in the planning and organization, in the adaptation of system and application software, in opening up new application areas and in training. The scope of applications ranges from a simple PC to an intelligent traffic control center and the Internet. Today's informatics includes methods and techniques such as cryptology, computer networks, network security and e-commerce, multimedia and the internet, digital offline media (audio, video, DVD, computer animation), distributed databases and artificial intelligence. Informatics and Media are therefore far more than just programming.

With a strong foreign language training and international experience as well as an international degree, graduates are open to any international labor market activity.
