Intelligent systems support and model human abilities such as seeing, hearing, knowing, understanding, thinking, deciding, learning, planning, translating, and speaking. Shaped by many new research results - for example in the fields of artificial intelligence, informatics and the technical signal and image processing -  in recent years, there has been a significant change in informatics: techniques, methods and components of intelligent systems play an increasing role as a key technology of information processing and engineering.

The proportion of products characterized by intelligent systems and procedures has grown significantly. The need for increasing computing power for developing these products can be made available by using modern and high-performance computer architectures. Informatics with a major in Intelligent Systems is thus co-operating partner for every science and every branch of practical activities and applications.

The area of application of intelligent systems ranges from space technology to medicine, household and leisure. Intelligent programmes can also be found in the field of software development and the Internet: Self-operating programmes, so-called "agents", for example, carry out the search for information on the Internet or assist buyers and sellers in electronic commerce over the Internet.

Study Goals

Graduates will be employed to design large-scale information systems for applications, to develop new methods of data processing and to advise and support users in information technology issues. Therefore prime importance of the education is the creative mastering of computer-oriented work and procedures and the underlying methods and ways of thinking. A broad based science-oriented education makes the neccessary basic interrelations (systematically organized principles) recordable. For this purpose a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the logical structures of data-processing systems and generally applicable principles are part of the curriculum.

Modern and innovative systems increasingly expect intelligent informatics skills. These requirements also become increasingly affordable. Therefore there are excellent employment opportunities for graduates with a major in Intelligent Systems in management and industry, small and medium enterprises or as independent entrepreneurs.
