Online Informatics and Media Degree (B.Sc.)

In contrast to more conventional forms of distance learning, with printed learning material sent by post, only a few regional presence sessions, where assigments are sent in and are asynchronously corrected, our Online Informatics and Media degree programme provides a far more intensive and richer support structure with our concept of "blended learning".

Blended learning is a solution that combines several different delivery methods, such as collaboration software, web-based courses, and knowledge management practices. Blended learning also means the interplay of various event-based activities, including face-to-face classrooms, live e-learning via audio-conferencing, and self-paced learning.

This richness of ways of support and supervision that are used in appropriate combinations, distinguishes the Online Informatics and Media study course. It proves adequate to maintain the commitment of students to the unviversity, to mentors and to the learning material.

Background image

Rapid technological change is having a fundamental effect on all branches of the media industry. Working processes have changed, and increased communication and processing of information using digital technology - desktop publishing, digital video and digital audio production - have blurred the boundaries between the various forms of media. This has led to the development of multimedia systems, which, in turn, have altered the perception of information processing, transfer of information and the aesthetics of information.

Buzzwords like multimedia, information highway, and digital television accompany us on our way to the information society. Many companies, public authorities and cultural institutions will increasingly use the possibilities of digital media. A vast variety of occupational fields are therefore open to those graduates who are familiar with media.

Media and communication are areas with great future potential. The rapid evolution of multimedia systems has led to an increasing demand for multi-skilled graduates in this field.

The degree programme is characterized by an interdisciplinary education with parts from informatics, communications engineering, media design, media technology and business administration. The aquiring of a solid technical and business expertise is indispensable, in order to remain flexible to the rapidly changing professional picture. Furthermore, a lot of emphasis is put on the development of teamwork skills - companies expect their employees to work well in a team.

Course Structure

The Online Informatics and Media degree programme (Degree: Bachelor of Science in Computer Science) includes a total of six semesters as a standard period of study. A practical study phase is planned for the 5th semester and the 6th semester is concluded with a final thesis paper. The study course has a modular structure and is evaluated according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The curriculum offers a thorough grounding in informatics as provided by traditional degree programmes at Universities of Applied Sciences in Germany. The course content is in accordance with the guidelines of the Gesellschaft für Informatik (German Computer Society).

Informatics and Media:

  • Online distance learning
  • Award: BSc in Computer Science
  • Length of course: 3 years
  • 5th semester: practice-oriented semester
  • 6th semester: Bachelor thesis
