Based on theoretical principles such as logic and mathematics, structure formation and modeling, today's informatics covers a variety of disciplines and applications, such as: cryptography, computer networks and network security, Java programming and e-commerce, digital systems, image and signal processing, multimedia and Internet technologies in interactive or linear media, computer animation and visualization, distributed databases and artificial intelligence, internet agents, intelligent robots, embedded systems and network computing. Informatics is so much more than just programming.

Career prospects for graduates with a degree in informatics are excellent.

All study courses are accredited by the Accreditation Agency ASIIN. With the completion of a Master's programme, graduates have the possibility of earning a doctorate.

Basic information on the occupational field of a computer scientist

As a key science informatics finds application in all areas of business and management. The tasks and responsibilities of computer scientists include:

• the development of IT systems, methods and procedures (ie, hardware and software),
• maintainance and enhancements of above mentioned systems (ie, adaption to changed user requirements, new legislation, changing technological environments, new research findings, etc),
• selection, adaption and use of such systems for existing and new areas of application,
• definition, analysis, modeling and information processing of technical systems, systems of human cooperation, and the coupling of these systems with each other for the purpose of work support, automation and quality assurance with the methods, procedures and systems of informatics,
• participation or possibly leadership of computer centers, data processing departments, application departments, projects or enterprises,
• distribution of data processing systems, consulting and training of users in planning, installation and use of data processing systems,
• theoretical and applied research in branches of informatics and its applications,
• assessment of the social impact of the use of data processing systems.

Computer scientists may therefore find their jobs in different fields of work, such as the media industry or business corporations that manufacture computers (hardware, if neccessary with appropriate software) or develop and distribute software. Graduates of the Informatics Department are also active in companies that provide data processing applications as services in consulting and administration, computer users in the industry and the industrial sector or public services. Some of the graduates of Informatics and Media are today successful, independent entrepreneurs in one of the above areas.
